Genießen Sie ein mittelalterliches Festmahl in der Großen Halle – ein Abend mit Musik, Met und gebratenem Fleisch, der die Welt des Adels von Bunratty wieder aufleben lässt.

Bunratty Castle’s massive grey stone walls rise over the green County Clare landscape like a monolith – a bold proclamation of power and strength. One of the most complete and intact castles on the island of Ireland, Bunratty started life in the 10th century as a Viking trading camp. The current castle – the fourth to have been built here – was constructed in 1425 and has seen warrior chiefs, Cromwellian forces, and centuries of Irish drama unfold within its walls.

Going back in time at Bunratty Castle

In its heyday, Bunratty was all about splendour, with stunning landscapes, gardens and a herd of around 3,000 deer. Today, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park sits on 26 acres of rolling countryside and offers something for everyone to enjoy.

The castle itself has been welcoming visitors since 1962 when it opened after extensive restoration. The guided tour here shines a light on its fascinating history – see the Great Hall, feast your eyes on a remarkable array of medieval and early Renaissance art and furniture, and venture below into the cool damp dungeons.

    Exploring a “living” village

At Bunratty Folk Park, a completely different experience awaits. Here, you can enjoy a recreation of 19th-century rural villages, with shops and farmhouses, a grocery, hardware shop, post office and more. In MacNamara and Sons, a recreated public house, you can explore the traditions and culture of the Irish pub through music, storytelling and atmosphere.

Outside, Bunratty continues to delight with the Walled Garden at Bunratty House. Built around 1804, the garden was designed to provide the grand house with fruit and vegetables, and boasts views over the salt marshes of the Owengarney River Valley to the east and towards the River Shannon Estuary to the south.

    Medieval adventures and whiskey experiences

A great way to experience Bunratty’s atmosphere is to join a medieval banquet. This long-standing tradition takes place in the Great Hall, where costumed performers, traditional harp and fiddle music, and a feast of mead and roast meats create a captivating spectacle. The experience must be booked online and is subject to availability.

For those interested in whiskey, the Whiskey Tasting Experience with JJ Corry Irish Whiskey brings you through whiskey bonding, selecting and blending in the unique surroundings of the JJ Corry Pub at Bunratty.

Food and drink at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

Bunratty boasts great places to eat and drink, whether you want to settle in for a long, lazy lunch or enjoy tea and scones in scenic surroundings. At the Earl’s Pantry, located in the admissions building, kick your visit off with hot drinks, sandwiches, sweet treats and more – a perfect place to refresh before you start exploring.

The Bunratty Tea Rooms offer a much slower pace. Located in the Folk Park, it serves a traditional selection of tea-room treats, such as homemade cakes and freshly baked scones. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, the Corn Barn is the place to go. Here, you can enjoy freshly prepared Irish food – such as beef and Guinness pie and seafood chowder – in an atmospheric setting.

Beyond the castle, there is a good selection of places to eat in Bunratty village also, including Durty Nelly’s and JP Clarke’s, with bar food available seven days a week.
