Having originally run the successful Monks of Ballyvaughan in County Galway, the Gill family bring their love of seafood to the medieval capital of East Galway at Gill’s Bar and Restaurant Athenry.
As one of the largest bars and restaurants and centrally situated in the locale, Gill’s is an ideal place to spend a few hours relaxing during a visit to this medieval town. The spacious beer garden is a beautiful backdrop to enjoy a beverage or some food. There is live traditional Irish music every Monday night and pop/folk on Saturdays.
Landmarks such as the only remaining archway known as the North Gate, St Mary’s Collegiate Church which is now the Athenry Heritage Centre, the restored Castle of St John’s Court and the 800 year old Dominican Priory ruin are only a short walk from Gill’s Bar and Restaurant on Old Church Street. The train station and bus stop is also only a few minutes’ walk.
Visitors are encouraged to park their cars in the outer car parks and enjoy a short leisurely stroll down the small medieval streets of the town.
Gill’s cater for everything from an intimate dinner to large family celebrations, civil ceremonies, banquets and large tours. Menus include options from land and sea, and Sundays are guaranteed to include a traditional roast lunch. The bar contains a selection of fine wines, beers and spirits and there are cocktail creations at the weekends.
Gill’s strives to provide quality food and great value in the heart of medieval Athenry.
