Its exact origin is uncertain but one theory is that it began as a result of the occupation of the area around Ballycastle by the MacDonnells of the Isles in the early part of the sixteenth century. At the present day fair, street entrainment and market stalls attract thousands of people to Ballycastle. Traditional and new street acts liven up the fair, Musicians, Dancers and Jugglers can be seen from the Quay Road Hall down Quay Road to the seafront area.
