Viking heritage runs deep in Ireland’s Ancient East…
Viking heritage runs deep in Ireland’s Ancient East, as a visit to
Waterford, Kilkenny or Wexford testifies. Better still, why not include all three on a driving tour that will offer a wonderful opportunity to experience 5,000 years of European history in a compacted area. The Ancient East area allows you to get off the beaten track to see, hear, touch and feel the imprints of the millennia of settlers in this land. Ancient Man, Early Christians, Medieval Lords, Colonial Settlers and their descendants have all been seduced by these most lush, green and fertile lands. Vikings made their mark in Ireland, no doubt about that. Bearing down on an unsuspecting Ireland from Scandinavia, hordes of wild wayfarers first arrived in the 8th century. They looted Ireland's monasteries, battled its kings and made off with priceless treasures and religious artefacts. In the wall of the Church of Ireland cathedral in Armagh lie the bones of Irish hero Brian Boru, who vanquished the Vikings and liberated Ireland at the historic Battle of Clontarf in 1014.
