A talk exploring the history of the Poor Law workhouse in Larne during the nineteenth century.

The Irish Poor Law Act of 1838 divided the country up into 130 Poor Law Unions, each of which was required to provide a workhouse where destitute people could be provided with food and shelter. Larne Union Workhouse, now Moyle Hospital, opened in 1842 with a fever hospital being added in 1844 and further buildings in 1847.

This talk explores the history of the Poor Law workhouse in Larne during the nineteenth century. The lecture focuses upon children's experiences of this institution and it also includes advice on how to use workhouse records for family and local history.

This is a free event, however places are limited and should be booked in advance. Light refreshments provided.
