Belfast Castle events, tours and walks

Concerts, céilís, artisan markets and yoga in the gardens are just some of the events held at Belfast Castle throughout the year, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their website for what’s on when. With its beautiful interior and picturesque setting, the castle is also a popular wedding venue – perfect for anyone who fancies being King and Queen of the castle on their special day.

    Outdoor delights

The castle gardens are a delight. As you wander, see if you can spot one of the nine cats, which are cleverly incorporated into sculptures, topiary and mosaics. Just a 5-minute stroll north of the castle, you’ll find the Millennium Maze, which was recently restored by a group of local volunteers. It’s a peaceful spot to pause and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

As for Cave Hill, you can uncover the history of the park at the Visitor Centre in the castle’s basement. You can also pick up orienteering maps from the Belfast Castle reception if you plan on venturing into the woodland. The castle, estate and Cave Hill trails are circular walking routes ranging from 1km to 7km, and are a great way to discover the area. Be on the lookout for cows, long-eared owls and other flora and fauna in this nature-lover’s dream.

Located in the castle’s atmospheric cellar is the aptly named Cellar Restaurant, where you can dine in elegant Victorian surroundings on dishes ranging from smoked haddock to steak sandwiches. Also housed in the cellar is the Tavern Coffee shop, the perfect place to enjoy coffee and cakes.

    Beyond Belfast Castle

It’s definitely worth taking your time and making the most of the great walking routes around Cave Hill Country Park while you’re here, but there are other great things to see and do nearby also. Belfast Zoo is only down the road if you fancy getting up close and personal with the animal kingdom, or swap the green grass of Cave Hill for the green fairways of Fortwilliam Golf Club, directly opposite the park, where a challenging 18-hole parkland dating back to 1891 awaits. Black Taxi Tours Belfast is one for those looking to delve deeper into the history and politics of Northern Ireland. And, of course, in the city centre and Titanic Quarter, a wealth of attractions await from Belfast City Hall to Titanic Belfast.

Centuries of history, scenic walking trails and spectacular views – it’s time to start planning your perfect Belfast trip today.

Do you need to book Belfast Castle?

It is not necessary to book tickets to visit Belfast Castle or the Cave Hill Visitor Centre, which is located in the castle’s basement.
