Light House Cinema is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey with a series of screenings of this iconic work of science fiction across the June Bank Holiday weekend.

2001: A Space Odyssey was based on a short story by Arthur C Clarke titled The Sentinel which was developed by Kubrick with Clarke’s help. It tells the storyof a voyage to the planet Jupiter to explore a black monolith discovered on there that is emitting radio signals. Their tranquil trip through the solar system is disrupted when the ship’s onboard computer, HAL, begins to act erratically.

The film is widely recognised as a classic for its revolutionary use of special effects, its mixture of music from classical composers like Johann Strauss and contemporary composers like Gyorgy Ligeti, and its scientific accuracy.

2001: A Space Odyssey is widely regarded as one of the most influential works in the history of cinema, as well as one of the greatest — and most mysterious — works of art of the 20th century. It is always wroth revisiting, especially on a large cinema screen.
