The Ecology Centre is a portal to explore the ecology, nature and wilderness of Connemara. The Centre will help you find carnivorous plants, edible seaweeds, bouncing bogs, breeding birds, seals haul outs and salmon leaping.
The Ecology Centre provides ecological expertise and interpretation to tourists with an interest in wilderness and nature. All the activities are managed in an eco friendly and sustainable way so as to minimise the impact on this landscape. Connemara is of international importance for nature and around 70% of the landscape is designated for this reason. Connemara forms part of an international network of conservation sites called Natura 2000. The ecology centres unique selling point is that on staff are professional ecologists with detailed knowledge not only of the locations of species and habitats or international importance but also how to manage tourists in a way that this nature capital is not eroded.
The centre operates on a few different levels. All year round it offers professional development for engineers and ecologists/school tours and general ecology courses. These are run at the centre in purpose built classrooms on specific fixed dates. Access to the centre is through booking and to date we have not opened to the public as a drop in centre. Tourism offerings are ecotours of seashore and bogs. The centre owns over 100ha of award winning conservation grade heath (Cregg hill)and bog and some of the activities will take place here. The centre also offers tours of the ecological highlights of Connemara including breeding bird colonies, otter tracking and seal watching.
