Sample the real capital with some of Cork's best hotels

2nd November 2011

The real capital of Ireland is Cork’s self styled moniker, and indeed a city with such an amazing market at its centerpiece, hundreds of brilliant pubs, a wit unlike nowhere else in the country and a long history of art and music deserves its props.

Cork city is compact and full of interesting and entertaining historical sites, maritime attractions and plenty of shopping. It’s also a perfect base for exploring the county of Cork as a whole, and the neighbouring counties of Kerry and Tipperary.

Hayfield Manor

Tucked away in a corner behind University College Cork, the five star Hayfield Manor is strange, in that it’s minutes drive from the city centre, but feels like it’s a countryside retreat. The main choice for celebs visiting the city, Hayfield is renowned for its brilliant food and the conservatory restaurant, Perrotts. Rooms are furnished with antiques, but still retain a modernity, while the exclusive residents' spa is a perfect way to unwind after an adventure in the city.

River Lee Hotel

Part of the Doyle group, this hotel is set on a vantage point overlooking Cork city, and is just a few steps to the famous Washington Street nightlife. Recently completely refurbished, the River Lee exudes modern design and warmth, and both the rooms and common areas are full of places to lounge and while away the day. Of course you’re very close to the shopping and historic areas of the city too, while the adjoining bistro, terrace and spa will put any guest at ease.

Clarion Hotel

Proudly leaning over the Cork skyline is the Clarion Hotel on Lapps Quay. Guests here are mere minutes away from the buzzing South Mall area, and the hotel faces the inspiring architecture of city hall. We’d recommend getting a bite to eat in Kudos restaurant, the hotel’s Asian fusion eatery, while Essence Spa is highly regarded in the city.

Rochestown Park Hotel

Formerly one of Ireland’s most important historical houses, the Rochestown Park has been transformed into a high class hotel over the last 20 years. Set in the lovely Cork suburb of Douglas, the house is on 11 acres of ground, and in 2008 saw a €18 million redevelopment. Complete with WiFi for all guests, 150 bedrooms, and well known as a perfect location for weddings and conferences in Cork, this former Lord Mayor’s residence is home to a Thalassotherapy Centre, and a state of the art gym, if you want to keep fit on your trip to the south. The large Mahon Point Shopping Centre is also only minutes drive away.

Castlemartyr Hotel

Not strictly speaking in Cork city, Castlemartyr is a prestigious golf, spa and resort located 20 minutes from the city centre. The 5 star 18th century classic manor house lies adjacent to the ruins of an 800 year old castle originally built by Strongbow, and the resort is nestled in 220 acres of mature landscape, which means the opportunity to partake in some unique pastimes. Enjoy archery, croquet on the lawn or clay pigeon shooting, or simply take a walk in the grounds past meandering streams. Golfers will enjoy the 18 hole course, those who want to be pampered will love the 10-room treatment spa, and the kids will be taken in by the Kids Zone and indoor pool. You can even take the hotel red setters, Earl and Countess for a walk! Sample the delightfully refined afternoon tea, or dinner in The Bell Tower, or just make the short hop into the city for the evening.
