Beautifully situated on a rocky island overlooking the gushing River Suir, Cahir Castle is one of the best-preserved castles on the island of Ireland.

Strolling up the cobbled walkway to the entrance gate, it’s easy to see why this imposing 13th century stronghold was once believed to be impregnable. Thick stone walls protected it for centuries from marauding enemies, and although it did eventually fall to the Earl of Essex in 1599, it was at the time of building an exceptional and highly effective design. More recently, it has starred in a variety of films from Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon to Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.

Walk through the main door and you’re into the courtyard of the castle, where much of the original 13th century structure remains. It’s a good idea to watch the audiovisual show before you start exploring here as it gives you the castle’s background, but after that you can stroll the castle keeps, wander its steep narrow staircases and step into the Great Hall. If you have more time, team a visit to Cahir with a trip to the Swiss Cottage, which can be reached along a tranquil walkway about 2km away. Finish your visit with a stroll in the Inch Field, which has great views of the structure and a duck-feeding station.
