Louise O’Neill’s stirring 2015 novel about sexual violence, Asking For It, has been adapted for the stage this year. It will arrive on the Abbey Stage in November, after debuting at the Cork Midsummer Festival earlier in June.
O’Neill’s novel was widely praised for its brave and forthright treatment of issues - such as sexual assault – that are so often brushed under the carpet by polite society.
The incident takes place in a small Cork town, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, and it sets off a timebomb of consequences that everyone surrounding the protagonist, Emma, has to deal with.
Meadhbh McHugh, who wrote the adaptation, and Annabelle Comyn, who directs, are the team charged with bring Asking For It to the stage, and given the rapturous reception the novel received, the theatrical version is a hugely exciting prospect.
