Stay in the walled city of Derry-Londonderry and take part in its eight day Halloween festival, which features over 100 events, 1,400 performers across 40 venues in and around the city and its famous 400-year-old walls.

The annual event is a home-grown and authentically Northern Ireland experience. Rooted in thousands of years of Celtic tradition, the people of Derry-Londonderry began the Halloween festival over 33 years ago, taking to the streets in masquerade.

Local folklore is rich and customs such as donning disguises, harvest feats, lighting lanterns and storytelling are all part of the festival. It fuses ancient, contemporary and international customs in an ambitious event of scale. Each year locals embrace the festival, extending a warm welcome to international visitors.

During the festival, the city of Derry-Londonderry is transformed with large scale site decorations, garden and window displays everywhere which all help in creating an atmosphere and buzz. An arts and cultural programme combines large scale outdoor events and rich local experiences. The city’s famous walls, which celebrate their 400 year anniversary this year, the Cathedral Quarter, Guildhall, Craft Village and surrounding areas become a stage for local and international artists.

Events such as Awakening the Walls, an illuminated landscape spectacular, creatively presents stories of Samhain with over 45 installations and a strong fringe programme that attracted more than 60,000 visitors in 2018. Little Horrors, Samhain Tales & Traditions, Ghost Tours, Spooky Book Festival, Haunted Harvest Markets, Tower of Terror, Monster Fun Fair, Sensory events, Freaky Science & Halloween Origin Tours are some events appealing to families and visitors wanting to learn, experience and explore. The visitor can actively participate. Costume and make-up workshops, pop up shops, masquerade balls, cos-play & costume competitions and a Jack O'Lantern festival all feature.

Visitors can make memories such as joining over 800 local and international performers in the annual illuminated street carnival spectacular which weaves through the city wowing thousands. Easily accessible on foot, a packed family friendly programme continues in to the evenings and tourists to the city will easily enjoy numerous events in one day.

The atmosphere is relaxed but full of movement as events in multiple venues creates a festival flow that appeals to families, curiosity and the desire for new experiences. For the livelier visitor, After Dark brings together a vibrant arts and cultural programme with late night coffee, drinks and dining options crammed full of history, attractions and a vibrant cultural scene in natural surroundings.
