Parades, concerts, fireworks – Dublin knows how do to New Year’s Eve in style. Last year, Dubliners amped up the party atmosphere with a two-day festival. But this year, it’s even bigger.
This year, Dublin has another trick up its sleeve.
On 31 December, the city will not only celebrate the countdown to 2013, it will kick off a year long, country-wide, super-huge festival… Yes, it could only be The Gathering, which will get going spectacular style on New Year’s Eve: this means a bigger, louder, and brighter festival than ever before.
As darkness descends, Dublin will execute a visual tour-de-force. A torch-lit procession of floats, illuminated torch bearers, fire breathers, towering stilt walkers and enthralling dancers will snake through the city streets creating the most extraordinary scene.

And that’s just the beginning.
Glittering fireworks and massive projections onto Dublin’s most beautiful architecture will follow the torch-lit extravaganza. Then, the outdoor Countdown Concert at the iconic College Green will become Party HQ, as the biggest names in Irish music will play their hearts out. You’ll need a ticket for the concert, but don’t worry if you don’t have one as the whole city will feel like one massive street party.
Free festival zones will be pocketed around the city, with live bands, DJs, animated lighting, dancers and street performers.
For New Year’s Day, try the Big Brunch – a family affair on “the morning after the night before”. Located in Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square, there will be face painting, balloon modelling, photo screening and delicious food stalls.
In Ireland, we just can’t throw a party without a céilí (traditional dance), so bringing your dancing shoes for performances from traditional music groups in the afternoon.
NYE will be the biggest night of the year – of both years – and Dublin is place to experience it.
Sure, wasn’t your New Year’s resolution to enjoy yourself more? Where better to start…
