Celebrating 20 years of uproarious bardic revelry
The Bard of Armagh Annual Festival of Humorous Verse, which began in humble circumstances in Keady in 1992 with some local people, quickly spiralled into a national phenomenon with bards from all over Ireland coming to Armagh to take part in the ancient Irish art of satirical versification.
Poets-and poetesses are judged not only on the quality of their poems but on the manner of their delivery, and over the years this has developed into an all round brilliance to equal their illustrious fore-bearers down through history.
Bards from Scotland, England and Wales have also plied their art at the annual City Hotel event and their recitations greatly added to the peals of laughter and applause that is the hallmark of an event unique in these islands.
We are keen to attract new participants to the Bard of Armagh Annual Festival of Humorous Verse. This unique competition offers up to £3000 in prizes each year. Held annually on the third Friday in November at the City Hotel in Armagh it is a sell out with 1000 tickets going within a few days, and represents the largest poetic gathering in Ireland.
As well as seeking new versifiers we would welcome interested groups to attend. We are able to do deals with local hotels and guesthouses for such groups, and will gladly forward a CD containing some of the epic poems to give an insight into what we are about. You will not be disappointed! Please visit our website www.bardofarmagh.com.
