As a part of the group exhibition, digital_self, IMMA will host a talk by journalist and author Mark O’Connell about his 2017 book, To Be A Machine – Adventures Among Cyborgs, Utopians, Hackers, and Futurists Solving the Modest Problem of Death
To Be A Machine focused on the topic of transhumanism; that is, the use of sophisticated technologies to enhance human intellect and physiology. In his book, O’Connell sought out a variety of transhumanists from around the world, and interviewed them about their various technological and philosophical approaches to the idea of transcending their own human limitations.
To Be A Machine’s topic fits neatly with the digital_self exhibition, which focuses on the question on how ubiquitous computer technologies are impacting our daily lives. O’Connell is extremely engaging both on the page and in person, and this is sure to be a fascinating talk.
