Ingredients for the perfect fashion photograph: Vogue US, Annie Leibovitz, a supermodel and Ireland’s County Kerry
We might be a little biased but we’re pretty confident the lush Kerry backdrop steals the show in Vogue’s revered September issue. Model Daria Werbowy and actor Adam Driver were following in WB Yeats and Maud Gonne’s footsteps in the dreamy shoot; imagined up by creative director Grace Coddington and photographed by the legendary Annie Leibovitz. Quotes from Yeats’s poetry are interspersed throughout alluding to his tempestuous friendship with Gonne.
Apparently Coddington chose Ireland as the location after she became bewitched by her surroundings during a visit to Werbowy’s West Cork home last year. The final images show Ireland’s rugged, rural beauty, and the fashion is pared down and rustic, using plenty of wool and tweed.
The Vogue team isn’t the first to stage a stylish shoot in Ireland and they certainly won’t be the last. We found more photographers and stylists who managed to capture Ireland (and fashion) at its finest.
Braving the heights at the Cliffs of Moher
No models suffered vertigo during this shoot! Italian photographer Stefano Ferroni took these images for Jam Studio at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The cliffs have always been one of Ireland’s most photographed sites, but Ferroni’s choice of black and white gives the cliffs a magnificently moody feel. Looking at the brave model perched on the cliff’s edge reminds us just how high the cliffs are – 650ft to be exact.
Kerry Fashion Weekend 2013
These shots for Kerry’s fashion weekend could have easily joined Leibovitz’s ones as they use the same stormy scenery. They were taken in Killarney, a particularly photogenic region in the county with its deep lakes, enormous mountains and endless lush greenery. Barry Murphy Photography shot the images and the designs featured are by up-and-coming local designers who showcase their work during the annual fashion week.

Powerscourt House and Gardens
What bride wouldn’t want to have her wedding in this romantic Palladian mansion in County Wicklow? You can just imagine this young couple having their first dance in the 13th century ballroom. This shoot was styled by Pearl and Godiva and Christina Brosnan was the photographer in question.

In the wild West
Last but not least is this amazing shot on Carraig na Finise on Inis Óirr (Inisheer), the smallest of the Aran Islands. Behind the model is the wreck of the cargo vessel “Plassey” which was shipwrecked in the 1960s.

And who knows, Vogue could be back on our shores soon with editor Anna Wintour in tow – she might want to see what all of the fuss is about!
