Ballyrafter House Hotel, a Georgian country house, was built in the early 1800's for the Duke Of Devonshire's estate. A family run 10 bedroom hotel it is set in lawned gardens, overlooking the fairytale Lismore Castle across the valley.
Ballyrafter House Hotel overlooks Lismore Castle, the Blackwater River and the Irish Heritage Town of Lismore. Their wooded desmene snuggles into the foothills of the Knockmealdown Mountains.
The Duke of Devonshire was the richest man in England when he built Ballyrafter House in the early 1800's. This fine country residence was intended for his estate manager and is a testament to the gracious life style of its first owners.
The Public Rooms feature fourteen foot ceilings, ornate moulding, luxuriant fireplaces, polished mahogany and plush carpets. Large windows overlook the acres of garden.
Though elegant, Ballyrafter offers, in the words of one writer, "unpretentious comforts". The place does not feel stuffy, but warm and welcoming. The sun room/conservatory and lounge bar contribute to this feeling of peaceful relaxation. So does the excellent Restaurant featuring local foods. Breakfast is included with all bookings.
Yours hosts, Joe and Noreen Willoughby, are happy to share their local knowledge, love of cooking and fishing, and their sunny home.
All bedrooms are ensuite and furnished with Georgian style furnishing, telephones, tea and coffee machines and hair dryers.
Fishing is owner Joe Willoughby's passion! The Blackwater River is a big, fast-flowing river particularly suited to fly fishing.
In the words of Georgina Cambell, Chairman, Irish Food Writers Guild, "A relaxing atmosphere, log fires and good home cooking".
