Léim Uí Dhonnabháin (Gaelic) derives from an ancient story of a local chieftain, O'Donovan, who while being pursued by British soldiers jumped the ravine and escaped his enemy, thus O'Donovan's Leap. This steep gorge over which the road passes beside Ger’s Wild Atlantic Diner divides East Carbery from West Carbery. The western half was always considered a wild and fugitive country..."beyond the Leap, beyond the law".
