65 years in the making the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival is a bucket-list experience combining the unique flavour of the Galway Native oyster with the fun and mischief of a weekend in bohemian Galway!

Over 65 years in the making the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival is a food culture experience like no other. Staged annually on the final weekend in September, it is a bucket-list experience where the unique flavour of the Galway Native oyster, the very best of the species, can be savoured and appreciated.

The festival offers a chance to experience the unique, bohemian nightlife on Galway’s cobbled streets with oysters on the menu throughout, as well as enjoying the competitive edge with the feature event - the hotly contested World Oyster Opening Championship. A taste for the finest seafood, a sense of mischief and some stamina are all you require.

On the opening night, as the sun goes down over the iconic Long Walk, contenders from around Ireland take to the stage to compete for the Irish Oyster Opening title and a place in the World Championships on Saturday. An MC will introduce the competitors and explain the competition rules as the Irish entrants shuck for their lives!

Live music will keep the dance floor full and with a choice of oyster and seafood options as well as a full bar there’s no shortage of sustenance!
Saturday afternoon is the big one - the raison d’être of the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival - The World Oyster Opening Championships.
Competitors from all over the world converge to compete for this acclaimed international accolade. Not just a case of speed - technique and presentation also play a role.Tension will mount as openers pit their skills in the hopes of being named the World Oyster Opening Champion 2020. Live music and scrumptious seafood provide an ambient backdrop to the competitions providing plenty to enjoy throughout the afternoon.

Saturday night offers a chance to slow the pace and relax after the days excitement with an evening of live music, the best of food and company.
Sunday is the day to kick-back with the laid back Féile Bia Na Mara, a family day of fun, workshops. There’s a jam packed programme of cooking demo’s from an impressive line-up of chefs, a celebration of the wonderful bounty found along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Enjoy the amazing live music while unwinding and taking in the iconic views and decide what to taste next. This and a programme of free children’s entertainment throughout this ’fun-day’ has everyone covered!
