Ardmore is from the Celtic "Ard Mor" meaning great height while Drumahoe “Droim nah Uamha” meaning the edge of the cave.
The settlements straddle either side of the River Faughan and contain a mixture of natural woodland and rich 17th Century architecture. Some of the most notable dwelling housing being The Beech Hill (now a hotel) and Ashbrook House (residence of the Beresford-Ash) both set in picturesque landscape.
Evidence of the areas industrial history can be found at the Bleach Green dating back to the early 19th Century. A feature of the site in the "Iron Bridge" erected in 1922 by Colhoun of Derry. The areas has a very strong connection with US Marines who were based in the Beech Hill in the Second World War, a permanent exhibition exists in the Hotel to commemorate the link.
