Bringing family together

Yvonne and David came to Ireland to explore the island as much as possible, aiming to trace some of their family tree along the way. Well, they got much more than they bargained for when they got in touch with our Community members. Thanks to their help, the couple was able to connect with the long-lost kin of David's grandfather.

Before our trip, a number of friends had told us that Ireland was magical, and they were right.

As a result, David returned home with his grandfather's Irish birth certificate and is intending to apply for Irish citizenship himself!

Things that make you go ‘moooo’

No matter what you’re interested in, we’re sure to have something to tickle your fancy here on the island. For example, Liz and her husband, who is a livestock agent back home in Australia, came to Ireland in the hope of exploring our renowned agricultural industry.

Our friendly agricultural experts on Community were able to suggest some great cattle and sheep marts to visit in the glorious Irish countryside. That’s probably not something you’d usually find in a tourist brochure, but made their trip a memorable one!

No stone left unturned

And we mean this quite literally. Mary Dillon from the US had ancestors who hailed from Kilmeadan in County Waterford. She wasn’t able to travel to Ireland herself, but wanted someone to help her hold a piece of Kilmeadan in her hand.

Thank you all so much for your amazing kindness and willingness to help me find a way to hold my roots in the palm of my hand!

Lo and behold, she had multiple volunteers from Waterford willing to send her a stone from home. Volunteer train driver Noel O’Sullivan from Kilmeadan village got there first and plucked a stone from Kilmeadan station platform. With the help of Waterford & Suir Railway Valley, it was sent on to Mary, who was thrilled!

From Canada to the Cliffs

Hilary Costello from Canada lives on a small farm. She got in touch because she and her travelling companion wanted to visit anything to do with nature and the wild. She received some great responses, which included boat tours of the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin, meeting local farmer and historian, Pat Sweeney, and information about staying in Pat's family-owned farmhouse.

As the famous Irish poet WB Yeats once said, "There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't met yet".
