OKO guitarist Shane Latimer is putting together a rare performance of Cobra by New York musician and composer John Zorn for The Dublin Jazz Co-Op’s Sunday evening slot in The Workman’s Club.

John Zorn is a legendary figure in the New York downtown music scene. His work as both a player and a composer of music has traversed the boundaries of jazz, avant-garde, rock, and contemporary classical.

Cobra, conceived in 1984 and released in 1987, is perhaps his most famous work. Taking influence from the likes of John Cage, it is composed as a system of rules rather than a sequence of musical events. There are cue cards and rules corresponding to the cues which inform the players what directions to take.

At this rare Dublin performance, Latimer will conduct a big band assembled from the cream of the Dublin jazz scene including Matthew Jacobson, Aleka Potinga, Chris Guilfoyle, and Keith Lindsay amongst others.
