Barnavara Hill, Glanmire, Cork,
Mr Brian Cross
Under the care of garden and landscape designer Brian Cross, Lakemount Gardens are a true oasis. Located at Glanmire, County Cork and boasting distant views of the River Lee, Lakemount features a wide selection of rare trees and shrubs.
Nestled at Glanmire in the hills high above Cork with distant views of the River Lee, Lakemount Gardens seem to blend into their verdant landscape. In this beautiful corner of Ireland, garden and landscape designer Brian Cross has created one of Ireland’s “flagship gardens”, according to the Royal Horticulture Society.
The garden was started in the early 1950s by Peggy Cross, who laid out the basic form of the garden by planting hedges to buffet the land from the relentless Atlantic Winds. The garden is south-facing and slopes gently away from the house, supporting the cultivation of a multitude of plants from all four corners of the world. Since these early plantings, the garden has evolved into a wonderful oasis of calm.
At Lakemount Gardens, visitors will find a wide selection of rare trees and shrubs. Specie rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris and magnolias are followed by an excellent selection of herbaceous plants. The autumn season astounds with foliage colour from birch, maples and rare trees and shrubs. Features include sweeping beds and a formal pond surrounded by steps and paving.
Lakemount is open all year round by appointment only. Entry is €7 per person.
