Blackwater Valley Opera Festival takes place from 26 May to 1 June 2020 at Lismore Castle and other stunning venues in the region. Ireland’s only summer opera festival will feature a double bill, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.
Situated along the historic and beautiful Blackwater Valley in County Waterford, the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival is now established as the leading summer classical music festival in Ireland. The Festival has a special and extraordinary atmosphere, with musical excellence and flair, and settings that are second to none.
The bespoke opera production takes place at Lismore Castle, with guests enjoying world-class hospitality and unrivalled access to the famous castle gardens. The opera is engaging, accessible and fun and features an Irish and international cast.
For the first time, the Festival will feature an Italian opera double-bill. It will present Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, followed by Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. The meeting of Pierre Emmanuel Rousseau’s direction, a double bill of opera, and Lismore Castle’s picturesque setting promises to make this summer’s Opera Festival the best Festival yet.
The Recitals strand of the Festival brings music to the historic houses, churches and other buildings of the Blackwater Valley, including Chamber Music in its original settings, and offering visitors the chance to truly get inside the famous houses and stories of the region. In 2020 the Festival will extend it's recitals programme to Youghal Co. Cork as it visit St. Mary’s Collegiate Church for the first time.
With a fantastic programme of 17 events over a packed seven days, it is no surprise that thousands of visitors travel to the Festival every summer. Partnering with local hospitality and accommodation providers, the Festival is a chance to enjoy a magical musical break, enjoy fine food, discover gorgeous gardens, meet the extensive team of wonderful Festival Volunteers, see old friends and make new ones, all the time enjoying exciting Irish and international classical music in this truly extraordinary part of the world.
