Jordan Patrick Smith, who plays Ubbe Lothbrok, puts it best when he says, “there is nowhere you can go in Ireland where you won’t find it absolutely beautiful”. Cascading waterfalls, acres of rolling green pastures, the sparkling blue waters of the epic coastline... with such natural showstoppers, it’s no surprise that huge film and TV productions are choosing Ireland as their star location!
And it’s not just the pretty sights that the actors love – our Viking history is just as captivating. And no wonder! The island of Ireland has played host to many incredible moments in history dating back to prehistoric times – Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford, was founded and shaped by Viking settlers, and these Nordic warriors ruled Dublin city with an iron fist for almost three centuries before their demise at the hands of legendary High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, in the Battle of Clontarf. Their presence was not limited to cities, however – the Vikings travelled all across the land, as they carried out raids in monasteries such as Devenish Island, where evidence of the Vikings' visits can still be seen today. No matter where you go in Ireland, you'll always find something historic worth checking out.
