Carlingford is a magical place, the main town on the Cooley Peninsula, a land steeped in Myths and Legends. Full of “old world” character, it is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Ireland. Named by the Vikings in the 9th century and later settled by the Anglo-Normans who were the architects for the medieval town layout we see today with the imposing King John’s castle dominating the harbour.
Carlingford was an important trading port on the Irish East Coast throughout the medieval era into the late 18th century, with the development of canals and road networks to Newry the port was eventually by-passed. This demise can only be viewed in a positive light as the lack of further economic growth through the following centuries has preserved Carlingford for today’s visitors to enjoy.
Boasting no fewer than eight medieval buildings including the Tholsel, Taaffe’s Castle and the Mint there will always be a pleasant surprise in store as you wander through the town.
With so many things to do in Carlingford and on the Cooley Peninsula every taste is catered for including guided walking tours of Carlingford and Greenore, Bus tours of the Carlingford and Mourne region, Cycling, Mountain Biking, Horse Riding, Sailing, Windsurfing, Canoeing, Fishing, Hill walking to name but some. Carlingford’s Restaurants are renowned for their quality and value and provide a great way to unwind after a day of activities or sightseeing.
