A festival of spooky fun across the Boyne Valley including Halloween hunts, fancy dress, haunted houses and pumpkins galore. With ‘Fun by Day’ events (for the kids) and ‘Fright by Night’ events there’s something for everyone!
The modern Halloween has roots in the Celtic Samhain festival and it is said that this tradition began over 2000 years ago on top of the ancient hill of Tlachtga, now called the Hill of Ward, Athboy, Co. Meath. Tlachtga was believed to be closely linked to the spirit world and it was from here that the sacred Samhain fire of the new year was lit and carried across the Boyne Valley and then on to light up Ireland’s Ancient East and beyond.
Recent archaeological excavations at Tlachtga suggest this ancient hill was indeed used for feasting and ceremonies, and to this day the Boyne Valley has remained the home of Halloween. The long-running Spirits of Meath festival offers spooky fun including Halloween hunts, fancy dress, haunted houses and pumpkins galore. With ‘Fun by Day’ events (for the kids) and ‘Fright by Night’ events there’s something for everyone! See spiritsofmeath.ie for more details.
