Enniskillen Castle sits proudly on the banks of the River Erne, guarding one of the entrances to the province of Ulster, and is a top attraction for visitors to County Fermanagh.

Founded in the 15th century by the Gaelic Maguire family, Enniskillen Castle occupies a prime position in Ireland’s history. One of the earliest historical mentions of the castle was during the Irish resistance to the English in the late 1500s when the castle was besieged. Today, one of the best ways of exploring this history is with a self-guided tour, which brings you through the Castle Keep – the oldest building in the castle – as well as the twin-turreted Watergate; a 17th-century addition when the building became a Plantation Castle. There are information plaques throughout so you can learn about the building’s heritage as you explore.

The bustling courtyard is an ideal place to admire the grandeur of this impressive historical building. Enniskillen Castle also houses two museums! In the Fermanagh County Museum, learn about the history of the lakelands county and hear stories about the people who lived here from the earliest settlers to the Maguire family to today. The Inniskillings Museum packs a similar punch with its fascinating collection of history. There’s only one town on the island of Ireland to have its name on two regiments: Enniskillen. Known as Inniskillings, the story of the upbringing of their cavalry and infantry regiments began here in Enniskillen Castle over 330 years ago, making it the perfect location to learn about the lives of the people who served in this regiment.
