Commissioned by Happy Days for a future Australian Aboriginal and Irish Waiting for Godot as part of the Global Godot series.

Sir Antony Gormley won the Turner Prize for his Field for the British Isles in 1994. He is best known for his Angel of the North. His Inside Australia, 51 insider sculptures in blackened
steel, was commissioned by Seán Doran for Lake Ballard, a salt lake in the desert of Western Australia.

“The tree I have designed as a stage element for Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot accepts its status as an image, and therefore its artificiality but nevertheless evokes placeness or rooted-ness in an other object-free horizontal plain. It is almost not a ‘tree’ at
all but an aerial or mast, which makes the same connection between sky and earth. It becomes about transmission or extraction rather than a romantic image of nature”
