Nestled in the heart of Galway City, stands the historic Garavan’s Bar. Winner of Whiskey Bar of the Year Connacht 2014 & 2015. Experience their distinctive whiskey platters or famous Irish coffees, while appreciating this 17th Century building.

Situated in the heart of Galway city’s main shopping thoroughfare, stands the historic building that is Garavan’s Public House. An architectural treasure, its current physical footprint dates back to the fortified Galway of 1650. While undergoing some renovations in the offices upstairs, original fireplaces were unearthed and traces of the tower (as significant historically as Lynch’s castle) and raw walls from the late Medieval period were also discovered. These precious finds gives one an appreciation why much of it is a protected building. When visiting, be sure to view the beautiful hand-made whiskey cabinets and original bespoke bar and counter, which are in exactly the same position as they were 80 years ago!

Winner of Whiskey Bar of the Year Connacht 2017, 2016, 2015 & 2014, as well as Overall Irish Whiskey Bar of the Year 2017, Garavan’s offer one of the most impressive whiskey collections in the country. Experience their distinctive whiskey platters, consisting of three carefully selected whiskies and accompanied by tasting notes. Choose from the Classic Irish Platter, the Single Post Still Platter, the Distillers Tasting Platter, the Irish Writers Platter or the Grand Master Distiller Platter.

The experience of a Garavan’s Irish coffee is also unique. Served in its own specially designed glass, alongside a bespoke Belgian chocolate. Garavan’s also offer an Irish cream coffee special (Bailey’s Irish Cream Liqueur is added with their own special ingredient!) Sit out front, Irish coffee in hand and enjoy one of the best people watching experiences around.

Currently displayed in the window is a grocery journal, dating back to the 1950s. This is truly a snapshot of times past: customers purchased their groceries and their name and shopping items were recorded in the journal for posterity. Why not see if you can get a sneaky peek inside to see if your grandmother’s groceries are noted in there!

Music is at the heart of Galway city and it certainly has a home at Garavan’s. Traditional Irish music can be enjoyed 7 nights a week during the summer months.
