As a part of their wonderful Perspectives series, The National Concert hall will host Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett and Nico Muhly, two acclaimed American musicians and composers, as they present work from their new collaboration.

Bartlett and Muhly have, over the last decade, worked together on a project titled Peter Pears: Balinese Ceremonial Music. The work is focused on their shared interest in the transcriptions made by Canadian ethnomusicologist Colin McPhee of music from the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java.

Music from the different islands of Indonesia feature many huge differences, not just to Western music, but between themselves, though they typically feature interlocking musical patterns in cycles.

Bartlett and Muhly have expanded McPhee’s transcriptions from two pianos into much broader arrangements with strings, metal percussion, and electronics. The duo will perform the entirety of their forthcoming album in this special performance.
