Eimear McGeown and Rory Dowse perform & explore British and Irish musical identities beyond borders

Whilst British and Irish communities have often engaged in distinct paths of culture and music, a subculture of music and identity has formed, influenced by both communities and characterised by elements of classical and traditional music.

British and Irish Identities in Music, sponsored by Lisburn Castlereagh City Council, provides a unique setting for this music, gathering its audience and transcending the polarised historical and cultural developments in Northern Ireland towards a celebration of their shared characteristics.

Eimear McGeown and Rory Dowse will perform music by British, European, and Irish composers, male and female, modern and historic. Some of the music was written before Northern Ireland existed, including a sonata by Thomas Roseingrave, and other featured composers are making music to this today, including Belfast’s Phillip Hammond and Londonderry's/Derry’s Phil Coulter.

Eimear and Rory will also perform select pieces from Eimear's new album – Inis – featuring Eimear’s compositions. The programme is centred on the evocative ‘In Ireland’ by Hamilton Harty, who was born in the Lisburn Castlereagh district and became renowned as one of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century.
