Kilmallock Library, Kilmallock, Limerick,
Free Market, the Irish National Pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2018 – travels to four Irish towns on it’s National tour, concluding in Kilmallock in September
The Free Market pavilion will be installed in Kilmallock Library from 19 - 22 September, with a programme of informative and fun events planned over three days. They will begin with a launch party in Kilmallock library on Thursday 19 September and a free public lecture on the Free Market project.
In Kilmallock, they will be focusing in particular on the role that tourism can play in small towns and will include guided town walks around Kilmallock’s historical town walls. They are working with architecture students from SAUL who recently studied Kilmallock as part of their 'town engage' research.
You are invited to take part in a series of free events helping them to spark new conversations around the future of our towns. A programme of events will run throughout the day across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can join in on guided walking tours, contribute to Vox Pop recording sessions, and for younger townies the team has designed a special Townie Scavenger Hunt. The Free Market team will be on hand to chat and learn about Kilmallock, as they continue to gather experiences, thoughts and dreams for towns on each stop of the National Tour journey.
Original content from the Venice Biennale exhibition will be included in the exhibition – including architectural models and drawings describing both the historic and contemporary conditions of the town. Specially commissioned photographs and drone photography will also be included, as will audio soundscapes and recordings - including a specifically designed Kilmallock soundpiece. Free Market News, which contains writings on rural towns from nearly 40 expert contributors, will be available to browse and take home.
