Howth Castle has opened its doors to the public with Guided Tours which visit the stunning Drawing Room, explore family history in the Main Hall and view the famous Binden portrait of Jonathan Swift.
Guided Tours of Howth Castle, home of the St Lawrence’s since 1177.
Turn the pages of history, step by step, exploring the upstairs and downstairs of Howth Castle, the intimate, private and warm hearth of history, legend and mythology. The tours take place on Sundays at 14:00 from April to September and are approximately 70 minutes duration.
The St Lawrence family came to Howth in 1177 and Howth Castle is one of the longest continuously inhabited private homes in Europe. The Gate Tower and Keep date from the 15th century and it is a unique illustration of how historic houses have evolved in Ireland over the centuries.
Visitors are brought around the exteriors of the Castle contemplating the bigger picture before walking up the staircase and being welcomed into the Great Hall. Visitors discover the history, tales and stories of the family through portraits, furnishings and artefacts. The tour then enters the dining room with its life size portrait of Jonathan Swift and hears the story of pirate queen Grace O’Malley's visit to the Castle.
In the 18th Century drawing room visitors hear stories of tragedy and loyalty before moving to the boudoir, with its celebration of racing and into the Lutyens Library. Pass down the backstairs behind the scenes to the 17th century kitchen, now the perfect home of Howth Castle Cookery School.
Prolong your experience and savour refreshments in the Castle Cafe in the walled garden. Under your own steam, stroll through the famous Rhododendron Gardens and seek out Aideen's grave.
