The Abbey Theatre will present Irish playwright Marina Carr’s brutal tragedy, On Raftery’s Hill, in a new production directed by Caitríona McLaughlin.

Set in rural Ireland, On Raftery’s Hill has at its heart the darkest of themes. Raftery is a powerful man who owns a 300-acre farm in the midlands, where he lives with three generations of his family. On Raftery’s farm however, there is not only the stench of rotting corpses from his dead animals, but also a dark secret about Raftery’s incestuous family life, and his daughters’ attempts to escape it.

In a tale of desperation and brutality, Carr’s writing is dark and crisp, unmasking a horrible world that lies beneath the sedate rural Irish setting.
