This month we are showcasing a wonderful exhibition by the very talented Shane McDonald.
Craftswirl @ Armagh Visitor Information Centre are delighted to be showcasing another one of Northern Irelands wonderful crafters for their August exhibition.
This month we have the very talented Shane McDonald.
Shane is originally from Armagh and studied Art to GCSE level at St Patrick’s Grammar school. In October 2013, he read an article on ballpoint pen art and was fascinated by what artists were achieving with such a simple medium. He decided to give it a go.
Shane continued in ballpoint pen, particularly for portraits, but has more recently worked in watercolour and attempted working with oils for the first time. Again, he surprised himself with the results, particularly with oils.
Last year, he noticed a miniature watercolour of the Cathedral and Callan Bridge in Armagh on his parents’ wall. He was intrigued by how the artist managed to convey so much with so little and it inspired him to create miniature pictures of his own.
For his miniatures, he works mainly in colour pencil and fineliner pen.
The subject matter is of places he loves or places he’d love to go to, places where memories are or could be created.
Shane says, “My reward for making these pictures is the possibility that they will bring back memories, or a sense of home, or positive feelings of any kind to anyone who sees them.”
Everyone is welcome to call and see this wonderful exhibition.
