Samuel Laurence Cunnane will be taking to the stage at the Hugh Lane Gallery to speak about his artistic practice as part of the Basic Talks series at the gallery.

Cunnane is a photographer who presents his hand-printed images of people, often in quite mundane situations, to audiences in galleries all over the world.

His images are striking - they are modern, yet the muted colours and archival photo paper he uses means they hark back to an indistinct moment in the past.

The photographer captures thoughtful moments - people lying under the trees in the park, dozing contently, or digging into a breakfast at a cafe. Not sensationalist images, but ones that allow you to peek into the subject’s life, in the slightest and most respectful way.

Samuel Laurence Cunnane will speak about the way he works; it will be interesting to hear about how he discovers his subjects and how willing people are to be photographed. In addition, he will have much to say about his process - sourcing the archival painting and, of course, choosing to head to the dark room to print his own pieces.
