2014 is the 20th anniversary of Derek Jarman’s death. A film director, stage designer, artist and gardener, Jarman’s best known films included Jubilee, Blue and Caravaggio starring Tilda Swinton. He won a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for outstanding single achievement. His War Requiem starred Laurence Olivier in his last performance. He also directed music videos for the Smiths and the Petshop Boys.

‘We are, and to the extent that we are, we are always waiting for something” said Martin Heidegger. I would say that we are always waiting for. Waiting for the nothing as much as something. If we are waiting when we watch Waiting for Godot it is not for something in the form of an answer to the question ‘What are we waiting for?’ Our waiting for is the ability to await such a question without demanding an answer.’
Excerpt from essay ‘Waiting For’ by Jonathan Lahey Dronsfield
