The Christmas Market at the Milk Market Limerick in Cornmarket Row, is one of Ireland's most famous markets. Local producers and traders have been selling fresh, natural foods and other produce here since 1852. In 2010, the market underwent major redevelopment and has been transformed into an all weather market, boasting Ireland's largest tensile structure, which weather proofs the entire market courtyard, while retaining its outdoor market atmosphere.
The new development, which includes a new food pavilion, won the prestigious 'Public Choice Award' at the R.I.A.I Irish Architecture Awards 2011. Today, the Milk Market is more popular than ever and every week of the year it attracts thousands of visitors. It's always the best place to buy delicious artisan foods and snacks, but it now offers so much more, from crafts to fashions and other surprises.
The Christmas Market will be special and will build upon the popular weekly markets. Admission is free and it runs Thursdays to Sundays from December 1 to Christmas Eve and all of Christmas week. Shoppers will experience wafting scents of spices and oils combining with the aroma of cooking. Food will sizzle. Christmas choirs will sing. Craft workers will explain their work. Buskers from around the world will merge their differing musical and entertainment traditions and the banter between traders and shoppers will add to the buzz and excitement of the market.
The market will attract over 50,000 shoppers during the run up to Christmas and will feature up to 60 stalls and shops, all packed with a wide range of artisan foods, eats and treats, crafts, decorations, toys, books, collectibles, fashion items and other gift possibilities and all set within a wonderful, fun, festive environment.
Choirs singing Christmas favourites will feature at different stages during the market and other live entertainment is planned. Lunchtime Fridays during December will be a great time to visit with free Christmas concerts, with a variety of musical events ever Sunday. The market is a great place to go for morning or afternoon coffee and festive snacks, or for a tasty, lunchtime treat. You can buy or just relax and take in the unique atmosphere of the Christmas market while sipping on a latte from Harpers Coffee, tucking into one of Country Choice's famous hot beef ciabiatta sandwiches, savouring a chocolate treat from Wildes Irish Chocolates, or, the finest of crêpes from Bon-appétit Crêperie.
