Shortly after his arrival in Paris in 1928, Beckett met James Joyce and agreed to help him with research on Work In Progress (which was to become Finnegans Wake). Roy Foster discusses with the writer Carlo Gébler this period in Beckett’s life and considers the influence that Joyce exerted on Beckett and other writers of the period.

Roy Foster is Carroll Professor of Irish History at Hertford College, Oxford. His books include his acclaimed biography, W. B. Yeats: A Life (which won the James Tait Black Prize), Modern Ireland 1600 – 1972 and The Irish Story: Telling Tales and Making It Up in Ireland.
