Legananny Dolmen is a megalithic portal tomb located approximately 5km north of Castlewellan, near the village of Leitrim, Co Down. It sits near the slopes of Slieve Croob and is a State Care Historic Monument.
The name Legannany derives from the Irish words Liagán Áine, meaning ‘Aine’s dolmen’. This tripod dolmen has a capstone over 3m long and 1.8m from the ground. It dates to the Neolithic period and the monument is approximately 5,000 years old. Portal tombs functioned as ceremonial funerary sites in the Neolithic Period.
