Are you interested in local history, landscapes and fascinating stories about people and place? On this tour we trace the connections between the Iron Age, shipwrecks, settler families, Quintin Castle, emigration and Slanes Graveyard and more… The ancient burial grounds of Slanes with the ruins of its old church on a prominent hill-top site is a landmark feature in the landscape south of Cloughey. It dates from the 13th century. In a field close to the churchyard is the entrance to an artificial cave or souterrain. There are spectacular, panoramic views across the countryside form this hilltop location. The Derry churches were the first churches built in this region of Ireland. They are located a short distance by road from Slanes. The tour lasts 1 hour approximately.
Suitable for all fitness levels. Parking on roadside.
