Phelim Drew’s adaptation of George Orwell’s first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, will be staged by The New Theatre this May.

Down and Out in Paris and London Orwell’s memoir of the times he spent in destitution and penury in the two titular cities during the 1920s. The first half details his time in Paris scraping by as a casual labourer; the second half, his time in England, living as a tramp.

Phelim Drew’s adaptation of the book turns it into a one-man show – which he performs himself – that brilliantly animates the trials and tribulations of the young Orwell’s life on the margins of society both on the continent and in his home country.
