National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square West, Dublin,
Explore over 70 works by Irish artist Frederic William Burton, painter of the much-loved masterpiece Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs.
Ireland’s favourite painting Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs plays a central role in this exciting new exhibition of over 70 works by Frederic William Burton.
Inspired by a medieval Danish ballad about Hellelil, who fell in love with her personal guard Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland, Burton’s epic watercolour captures a clandestine encounter between two forbidden lovers in what was their final moment together.
Officially voted the nation’s favourite painting in 2012, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs never fails to pull on the heart strings. Irish born Burton was a highly accomplished Victorian watercolour artist and in this special exhibition you’ll find out more about his life and influences, including encountering the Pre-Raphaelite circle in London and his period in Germany.
A must-see for art lovers, this exhibition showcases works by a number of other artists alongside Burton including John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Edward Burne-Jones.
