The River Drowes rises from Lough Melvin flowing west for five miles until it enters the sea above Tullaghan in County Leitrim. It is a good spring and summer salmon river. Sea trout only run in small numbers but it holds good stocks of brown trout.
The River Drowes is primarily managed by the Drowes Salmon Fishery at Lareen Estate who can provide permits, fishing tackle and tours. The river is some 5 miles in length, with over 70 named pools, flowing from Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay and entering the sea at Tullaghan, just outside Bundoran.
The spring salmon season opens on 1 January and fish are usually taken on opening day. The peak of the spring run is in April and the fishing is always good in May with the peak of the grilse run taking place in June. The fishing usually picks up again in September. The brown trout fishing can be good, especially on summer evenings, but it is largely unused because of fishermen's preoccupation with salmon.
The number of rods allowed to fish on the river at any one time is not limited and all legitimate fishing method are allowed.
Open season for salmon and sea trout is from 1 January to 30 September. The Brown Trout season is from 15 February to 30 September inclusive.
