Set against the wild beauty of Connemara in County Galway, Kylemore Abbey began as a declaration of devotion. In the 1860s, politician and businessman Mitchell Henry built this lakeside castle for his beloved wife Margaret, creating an elegant retreat framed by soaring mountains and glassy waters. Today, visitors can step inside this extraordinary love story – exploring the restored rooms, strolling through the Victorian Walled Garden and pausing at the neo-Gothic church built in her memory.

    Life at Kylemore

Inside the abbey, you can discover the world Mitchell and Margaret Henry created – a refined Victorian home filled with art, furnishings and personal touches that reflect their ambition and taste. The restored rooms offer a glimpse into life in this grand lakeside retreat, where elegance meets the raw beauty of Ireland’s west.

Outside, the Victorian Walled Garden provides a striking contrast to the rugged landscape beyond its stone walls. Once a productive estate garden, it is now carefully restored and open to wander, with formal flowerbeds, glasshouses and seasonal colour throughout the year.

Margaret’s sudden death shaped the estate’s future, and the delicate neo-Gothic Church built in her honour still stands quietly by the water. She is laid to rest here, and after his death Mitchell was buried beside her – their touching story forever part of this unforgettable landscape. In the decades that followed, the Benedictine nuns made Kylemore their home, adding new layers of education and community to its story.

    Explore Connemara

Beyond the abbey walls, Connemara stretches into a landscape shaped by mountains, lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. A short journey from Kylemore is Connemara National Park, with trails that range from gentle woodland walks to climbs that reward you with sweeping views over bogland, peaks and coastline.

Nearby, the village of Letterfrack offers cafés and a welcoming base for exploring the region’s quieter corners. To the west lies the vibrant town of Clifden, known for its arts scene, craft shops and the Sky Road, a scenic 16km route that winds along the coast. Another of Connemara’s most captivating sights is Killary Harbour – Ireland’s only fjord. It's a dramatic setting for boat trips and shoreline walks.
