Standing on the border between counties Westmeath and Roscommon, Athlone is famous for being at the heart of Ireland – a traditional stopover from east to west.

But this busy market town has become one of the most enjoyable destinations in Ireland, thanks to its characterful pubs, buzzy vibes and captivating history. Much of that history can be uncovered within the fascinating Athlone Castle, which looms over the banks of the River Shannon. A castle has stood here since the 12th century, and over the centuries it has experienced a remarkable series of events, from dramatic 17th-century sieges to the establishment of a museum in 1967.

Today, enter through what remains of its 13th-century walls and you’ll be into a super-modern interactive environment that tells its story brilliantly. Eight exhibition spaces set out the town’s history effectively with panels, artefacts, touchable objects and games. Finish off by stepping out onto the battlements where you can look out at the River Shannon and see as far as the distant mists of Lough Ree. It’s the perfect place to get an understanding of Athlone’s strategic importance – with stunning views to boot.
