Hinterland is an arts and literature festival based in the original home of Ireland’s most famous book, that is, The Book of Kells.

While that magnificently illuminated manuscript now resides in Trinity College, the town of Kells celebrates its rich literary heritage with four packed days of events.

Kells had previously hosted a satellite sister festival of the famous Hay Festival, which itself takes place in Wales each summer, but last year it separated and established itself under the Hinterland name.

The festival will feature interviews, panel discussions, lectures, debates, and film screenings all circulating around the written word. And that’s not evening taking into account the numerous chats had over cups of tea or pints after all the official events have wrapped up.

Amongst the names touted for the 2018 edition of the are Colm Tóibín, Catriona Crowe, Lisa McInerney, and John Banville with many more interesting voices to be announced. The whole town really gets involved in the effort, turning Kells into a “Sea of Green” for Hinterland.
