The island of Ireland sure packs a punch when it comes to variety. Mountains and valleys, boglands and beaches, tiny towns and rushing cities: each has its own unique attractions and draws its own delighted visitors. So whether your trip has you seeking out a rural retreat, like Lough Erne Resort in County Fermanagh, or a slick city spot, such as Derry~Londonderry’s Bishops Gate Hotel, cosy castle quarters, like those at Kilkea Castle, or perhaps a seaside stay at Waterford's Cliff House Hotel, Ireland’s hotels will rise to the occasion.

    Hotels for every season

So often in Ireland, the stories are what sell a place and bewitch people into returning, time after time. Just like the ghost of Lady Isobel Shaw draws visitors to Ballygally Castle, the tales of Attila the Hun and his descendents enchant guests at Castle Leslie; and its role in the 1916 Easter Rising fascinates patrons of Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel. There’s simply something special about staying somewhere with a history.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you can’t ignore the surroundings, either! Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa boasts breathtaking panoramic Atlantic Ocean views; Killarney’s Lake Hotel allows you to soak up the spectacular sights from an outdoor hot tub; and you can slumber at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in swanky Slieve Donard Resort and Spa.

    How to pass your time

One of the great joys of hotel living must surely be the 24/7 excuse it affords you not to cook for yourself! This island is a foodie paradise and whether you’re travelling north, east, south or west, you’ll be blessed with the best local fare you’ve ever eaten. Hotels like Dunbrody Country House, Cliff at Lyons and Killeavy Castle Estate are famed for their in-house restaurants; but make sure you get out into the surrounding area on at least one night of your stay to try the local eateries, too.

Of course, every break should allow a little time for some pampering. Ireland’s spas are a masterclass in melting your troubles away—just head to hotels like Castlemartyr, Monart or Galgorm, and you can’t go wrong.
