    Culture and heritage
20 mins to City of Derry Airport

Journey through the poignant chapters of Northern Ireland's past and explore the community's legacy of resilience.

Understanding the history of Northern Ireland can greatly enhance a visit to this fascinating part of the island, and the Museum of Free Derry is a great place to start. This compelling museum opened in 2006 in the Bogside area of the city and stands as an important reminder of a pivotal era in Northern Ireland’s history. Small but insightful, the exhibition tells the story of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, as well as the Free Derry movement in the years from 1968-1972.

Located in the same area where the original events unfolded, the museum also details the tragic story of Bloody Sunday. With over 25,000 artefacts including photographs, rare documents and personal accounts, the Museum of Free Derry offers the chance to explore events both from a historic and a contemporary perspective.
